Aimee + Matt's 2nd Anniversary Quilt (front)
2026
Improvisational composition with thrifted fabrics, clothing, and crocheted granny squares. Machine sewn with hand stitched and appliqued pieces. Longarm quilted by yours truly.
114 inches x 94 inches (super queen)

I began by asking Aimee and Matt what their favorite colors were (fall colors- dark oranges, maroons, greens) and went to work. All fabrics were donated or thrifted and include family clothing, satins, silks, corduroy, cottons, two tablecloths, a mermaid costume, sparkly stretchy dance costume fabric, vintage 1970s and 1980s fabrics from childhood. The granny squares were generously crocheted by Melissa

The composition was improvised. I began by cutting various width fabric strips and putting them in a pile. Fishing for each strip one at a time without looking or consciously choosing, I sewed rows of strips together to make four columns and then arranged and rearranged and added and subtracted. Is it better this way or that? This way or that?

Near the end, I asked Aimee to help me place the granny squares. They reminded us both of a well loved blanket she had as a kid. What an honor it was to work on this for her and Matt.

Plus, making work like this is all play and joy and curiosity--wondering, "what if?" and "what's next?".

Worthy questions for a quilt, and a relationship, I think.
